GOP Needs to Stop Feeding the Hands That Bite Them

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

That’s Good Advice

The old idiom is “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.” Which means don’t “turn on someone that has supported you.”

The Republican Party – is far too often the Stupid Party. They far too often turn the old idiom on its head – and feed the hands that bite them. They dump tons of money on people – who then use it against them. Not particularly intelligent.

There is a decades-old informal campaign entitled “Defund the Left” – an effort to dry up the hundreds of billions of government dollars per annum handed to Leftist organizations.

To cite but one of millions of examples: Planned Parenthood. They receive more than half a billion dollars of federal coin – each and every year. They just spent $734,000 – backing the Democrat in the Georgia-06 Congressional special election.

You would think Republicans – who currently run the White House and Congress – would want to stop nourishing that particular caustic meathook. (Not to mention not wanting to spend government money on ending about 330,000 babies per annum.)

But – not so much: GOP Senator Defends Funding Planned Parenthood. More

Bottom-Up Cronyism – No Better Than Top-Down Cronyism

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

Enough, Already

Government cutting special deals for special friends – is always obnoxious, obnoxiously bad policy. It takes a lot of money from innocent, unwitting citizens – and hands it to politically-connected cronies. It warps functioning marketplaces – when governments place their massive thumbs upon the scales to tilt the system.

We’ve just narrowly escaped the Barack Obama Presidential Administration – almost indubitably the biggest imposer of top-down federal cronyism in our nation’s history. Thankfully gone – their cronyism is not forgotten by lower-level government officials looking to continue the obnoxiousness.

One of the companies seeking to maximize this bottom-up cronyism – is Exelon Energy. They run nuclear plants in several states – and they are going state-government-to-state-government looking for crony bailouts. Looking to save themselves – at the expense of the many states’ taxpayers.

Illinois was the first state to cough up the crony dough. Illinois’ elected officials moved crony-quickly – so as to short-circuit any citizen attempts to oppose. More

Globalism Fail: Not All Governments Are As Nice As Ours

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

Let’s Hope So

The United States has spent the last four decades – “free trading” away millions of domestic jobs to everywhere else on the planet. Whether accidental or intentional on our part – the gigs left.

It was intentional on the part of all the world’s other governments. They aren’t nearly as free trade-y as we are – they rigged their laws to favor companies that came and stayed within their confines. And they would break the law – and our trade agreements – when that wasn’t crony enough.

This isn’t very nice of them – but you really can’t blame them. They’re only doing what’s best for them and theirs.

Put the blame on us – we have long been titanically stupid about of all of it.

Year after year, decade after decade, trade deal after trade deal – we allowed them to screw us to an ever increasing degree.

And now, after nearly a half century of allowing these not nice governments to build massive trade clout against us – we shouldn’t act surprised when they begin to press things further. By hook or by crook – by any means necessary. More

It’s Still a Federal Bill – So It Still Nationalizes Tort Law

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

Let’s Please Hand This Back to the States

H.R. 1215 – the bill to nationalize tort law – is back.  Which is bad news – and makes even less sense than the last time it was under consideration.

It came up in mid-June, but was pulled – for exactly the right reason.  Tort law is the many states’ domain – so this bill is anti-Constitutional.  And Congress pulled it – on federalism grounds.  Smart.

But now it’s back – with its backers claiming they’ve made some changes to address the federalism problem.

Except – that’s not possible.  It’s still a federal government bill – so it still would nationalize tort law.

You can’t “tweak” that away.

So H.R. 1215 – should simply go away.

Fake News vs Real Collusion: Wash Post Concocts the Former, Protects the Latter

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

A Long, Storied Tradition

The Washington Post is a legacy, old school fake news outlet. Aside from the New York Times, no newspaper carries more national clout.

Largely because of how much they forty-plus years ago made of a third-rate burglary by a Republican presidential campaign on its way to winning forty-nine states. (Had Republicans not broken into the Democrats’ Watergate headquarters, they’d have won, what…forty-three states?)

There were about a half dozen Barack Obama Administration scandals that were each exponentially worse than Watergate – about which the Washington Post couldn’t have cared less. Worse, the Post provided all sorts of cover-up “coverage” of these monstrosities – routinely, incessantly defending the indefensible.

No section of the Post deviates from the Leftist favoritism. Let us look at the Tech section – and a “reporter” by the name of Brian Fung. More

‘Carried Interest’: Let’s Not Increase Taxes on Our Economy’s Engine

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

Always Even More Than Meets the Eye

Leftism is such an easy soundbite sell. It’s a gaggle of five-second one-liners that seem to make perfect sense – right up until someone applies actual thought to any of them.

One of the all-time favorites is – “Tax the rich!” (I’m fairly sure the exclamation point is always mandatory.) They’re rich, they’re evil – they should pay MORE!

But let’s now apply some actual thought to their fortune cookie wisdom.

The dreaded One Percent – pay nearly half of all federal income taxes. So they are paying “their fair share” – and the fair shares of roughly 150 million other Americans.

Then there’s all sorts of additional taxes wealthy people pay (that most of the 99% do not). Most of these taxes tax money – that has already been taxed as income (which I find to be particularly, additionally obnoxious).

Most of these taxes – attack the money that makes our free market system possible. Income taxes are awful and pernicious – but it is the taxes on big coin pools that are really an assault on our system. More

Senator McCain is a Crony’s Best Friend

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

McCain’s Anti-Cronyism Is…Blurry

For a guy who has allegedly spent his political career trying to make and do right – after his being named in the late 1980s Keating Five scandal – Arizona Republican Senator John McCain certainly still likes to do a whole lot for high-donating cronies.

A Keating Five refresher:

“The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The five senators – Alan Cranston (Democrat of California), Dennis DeConcini (Democrat of Arizona), John Glenn (Democrat of Ohio), John McCain (Republican of Arizona), and Donald W. Riegle, Jr. (Democrat of Michigan) – were accused of improperly intervening in 1987 on behalf of Charles H. Keating, Jr., Chairman of the Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which was the target of a regulatory investigation by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB).”

Sounds an awful lot like cronyism to me – old school, vintage edition.

McCain’s being named made him hyper-sensitive to the charge – and hyper-and-over-re-active trying to play catch up. More

Trump and His Commerce Secretary: It Isn’t Free Trade – If They’re Uber-Protectionist

We Have Been. In Many. For Decades

We have repeatedly written about the widespread ignorance/misinterpretation of now-President Donald Trump’s perspective on trade.

Way too many people – who are alleged to be able to know better – dismiss Trump as anti-free trade. Or even anti-trade. Behold the Washington, D.C.-New York City Bubble boobery on parade:

Obama’s IRS 2.0 (or 3.0…4.0?…Or is it…?)

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

Bosom Cronies

Remember the Barack Obama Administration’s Internal Revenue Service (IRS) scandal? The media really wish you wouldn’t, which is why they never really reported on it while it occurred. And, in many ways, the IRS scandal continued well past its initial exposition date.

Here’s a (re)fresher:

IRS Targeting Scheme is a Scandal with No End in Sight: “When the Senate Finance Committee released its findings on the Internal Revenue Service scheme targeting conservative organizations a couple of weeks ago, the initial determination was clear….

“(T)he evidence shows partisan political animus resulted in the unwarranted targeting of conservative groups because of their political beliefs….

“(Top IRS official Lois) Lerner called Republican critics ‘evil and dishonest’ – even ‘hateful.’

“She lashed out following an appearance before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee in 2014: ‘Yesterday was a doozy. They called me back to testify on the IRS “scandal,” and I tool (sic) the 5th again because they had been so evil and dishonest in my lawyer’s dealings with them….’” More

The NY Times and the Guy Hunting the GOP: Latest in a Long History of Fake News

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

Not Exactly Breaking News

The New York Times is simply a ridiculous publication. And has been for decades. It is hopelessly, blindly, willfully Leftist. And has been for decades. And to advance their Leftism, they have lied and lied again and again. For decades.

Just yesterday, their Editors en toto wrote about the Bernie Sanders supporter who went Republican hunting in Alexandria, Virginia – firing more than fifty rifle shots at GOP Congressmen and staffers on a baseball diamond. Included in that piece was the following:

“In 2011, when Jared Lee Loughner opened fire in a supermarket parking lot, grievously wounding Representative Gabby Giffords and killing six people, including a 9-year-old girl, the link to political incitement was clear. Before the shooting, Sarah Palin’s political action committee circulated a map of targeted electoral districts that put Ms. Giffords and 19 other Democrats under stylized cross hairs.”

This is a lie. A lie that was thoroughly disproven…in 2011. Loughner was not only insane – to the degree that he was at all political, he was a Leftist. And the odds that this insane, apolitical idiot had actually seen Palin’s website – were, conservatively, a trillion-to-one. More
