More Broadband Access for Everyone? Get Rid of the Massive Government Taxes and Fees

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

Will No One Rid Us of These Meddlesome Fees?

One of the very many avenues the Left uses as an excuse to grow government – is the alleged “digital divide.” The number of people who do not have access to Internet service – contrasted with the number who do.

Broadband Digital Divide ‘Becoming a Chasm’: “There is ‘growing digital inequality between…the rich and the poor…’ says the United Nations’ Broadband Commission in its latest report.”

Does anyone actually believe the “digital divide” “between rich and poor” in the United States – is actually getting worse? That there is a smaller percentage of people with Internet access now – then there were three years ago? Five? Ten?

It is an absolutely absurd assertion. More

Do So Globally – and Locally

Big government policies are, of course, antithetical to productive people engaging in useful work. Most people who do a job – find quite obnoxious the giant bites governments take out of their paychecks, efforts and time.

These people are natural allies of the less government movement. But of course, big government and its advocates know this. So governments and their advocates have long been crafting big government policies – with crony outs for productive people. More

Bureaucracy Power Grab Comment Periods Are Always Stupid – and Often Corrupt

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

We Desire No Kinks in Government – Unless It’s Ray Davies

We have very many times discussed the very many unilateral power grabs of the very many Executive Branch departments, agencies, commissions and boards.

And we have noted that a particularly stupid part of these power grab processes – is the fake democracy veneer applied that is the Comment Period:

“Where some agency of which you’ve never heard – and to whom you’ve elected no one – quietly announces a period where you can file thoughts on the damage they’re about to inflict upon you. More

Google’s Long, Sordid History of Rampantly Abusing Its Massive Power

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

All Hail the King – or Else

Uber-huge mega-company Google has been of late repeatedly buffeted by very unflattering news. Story after story demonstrating Google’s corporate philosophy of using its massive power to bend others to its will – and break those who won’t.

Some of us have been chronicling this for years. But now it is breaking into the very mainstream.

The Dutch boy removing his digit from the Google news dyke – was James Damore. Damore, a Google engineer, wrote a memorandum detailing the surprising oneness of Google’s hive mind.

Net Neutrality Proven Titanically Stupid – By Net Neutrality’s Proponents

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

So Let’s Put Them in
Charge of the Internet

Network Neutrality has for more than a decade been all the rage on the Left. Emphasis – as is alway the case with the Left – on rage.

Especially so now, as the Donald Trump Administration’s Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is in the process of rolling back said power grab – along with the equally ridiculous imposition on the Web of 1934 Title II landline telephone law. All imposed just two years ago by the Barack Obama Administration’s FCC.

Net Neutrality is the titanically stupid insistence that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) treat each and every thing on the Internet exactly the same.

For instance, emails from Nigerian princes – deserve equal access to you as does a doctor performing your remote, online Lasik eye surgery. If that causes your surgeon’s connection to buffer and stall – well that’s just too bad. You didn’t want to read those Nigerian prince emails anyway.

We less government types find Net Neutrality and Title to be titanically stupid for at least two reasons. It is antithetical to the Constitution – and to even a rudimentary understanding of economics. More

The Utter Dumbness of the Bureaucracy ‘Comment Period’

The United States is a Constitutional republic. What does that mean?: “A constitutional republic is a state where the head of state and other officials are elected as representatives of the people, and must govern according to existing constitutional law that limits the government's power over citizens. In a constitutional republic, executive, legislative, and judicial powers are separated into distinct branches and the will of the majority of the population is tempered by protections for individual rights so that no individual or group has absolute power.” These divisions of government were emplaced here by our Founders - to also protect We the People from government. Each branch is supposed to serve its limited role - in the whole. When one branch starts doing things another branch is supposed to be doing - things quickly go awry, and government gets very big. Our Legislative Branch - is tasked with legislating. And only the Legislative Branch is so tasked. Its officials - whom We the People elect - write the laws under which we live. The Executive Branch - is headed by the President we elect. Who signs the laws passed by the Legislative. And then his Branch - executes. Millions (ugh, yes, millions) of unelected bureaucrats implement the laws written - as written. No more, no less. No Executive Branch agency can write a single regulation - unless they are first tasked with so doing by the laws of the Legislative Branch. And they must write the regs within the confines of the laws of the Legislative Branch. Anything else - and they are performing a cheap imitation of the Legislative Branch. Constitutionally - no bueno. Our federal register - the government’s catalogue of regulations - grows by thousands of pages every year (until, it appears, the arrival of President Donald Trump, God bless him.) Under ex-president Barack Obama the register grew exponentially - during a time of historic Congressional deadlock and inactivity. Which means these tens of thousands of pages of new regulations - were nearly all added completely untethered to any legislation. That’s the Executive - pretending to be the Legislative. Constitutionally - no bueno. One of the ways these agencies attempt to cover up their unilateral power grabs - is with a veneer of alleged We the People participation. Behold the utter dumbness of the “Comment Period.” Where some agency of which you’ve never heard - and to whom you’ve elected no one - quietly announces a period where you can file thoughts on the damage they’re about to inflict upon you. Of course, the Comment Period is entirely and solely Democracy Theater. (Again, we’re a republic, not a democracy.) Again, if the government wants to do something new - the process has to begin with legislation by the Legislative Branch. Not bureaucratic fiats by Executive Branch agencies. The Comment Periods - are just dumb. Again, these bureaucrats aren’t elected. And they are under no obligation whatsoever to have the comments you file - affect at all what they're about to do to you. If the comments favor the power grab they are about to execute - they trumpet the results, and move forward as planned. If the comments oppose - they ignore the results, and move forward as planned. And this nonsense - allows for much additional nonsense by outside pro-government Leftist groups. They get to turn the Democracy Theater - into Kabuki Theater. They enlist their armies of uninformed nonsense-spewers - to spew their nonsense into the comment process. To wit: The current cavalcade of inanity being shoved at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Trump’s FCC is in the process of undoing a huge Obama FCC power grab. Internet reclassification - to absurdly subject the Web to 1934 landline telephone law - so as to then impose the absurd Network Neutrality. A HUGE power grab - and titanically stupid policy. The Trump Commission is absolutely correct in undoing all of it. Because they are - we can count on the pro-government Leftist groups to screech bellicosely in opposition. Launching DearFCC: The Best Way to Submit Comments to the FCC about Net Neutrality It’s Official: Trump and Pai Plan to Destroy Net Neutrality: “Help Save Net Neutrality: Send a Comment to the FCC.” (Pai - is Trump’s FCC Chairman Ajit Pai.) Comments for the FCC on the Net Neutrality Proposal But the Comment Period results - have only served to reveal how dumb the Comment Period is. Oh - and how violent and racist the Leftists are. Pro-Net Neutrality Activists Filed 5.8 Million Fake Comments with the FCC Fake Pro-Net Neutrality Public Comments Flood FCC From Russia, Other Foreign Countries John Oliver’s Net Neutrality Campaign Filled With Bots, Fake Comments, Racist Attacks Against FCC Chairman And let’s be honest - Net Neutrality is a relatively little-known, fairly complex issue. Survey Finds Vast Majority of Americans Are Clueless about Net Neutrality Which yet again proves that this bureaucratic Comment Period - is just dumb. If they don’t know what it is - why have them comment upon it? Why have any portion of the bureaucracy's decision predicated upon the results? If Net Neutrality is so important to We the People - impose it the way the Constitution mandates it be imposed. Have our elected Legislative Branch officials convince us we need it - and then write law emplacing it. Pass it through both Legislative houses - and have the President sign it. And then - and only then - have the FCC impose it. Strictly and solely within the confines of the law directing the FCC to impose it. At this point, finally, nearly everyone is clambering aboard the Constitutional approach. ISP, Edge Groups Talk Net Neutrality Legislation: “House Energy & Commerce Republican leadership got together, both in person and by phone, with the major trade associations on both sides of the net neutrality issue Monday in a series of meetings throughout the day to discuss possible legislative pathways to clarifying the FCC’s network neutrality authority.” Which only leaves the hardcore anti-Constitutionalists demanding the power grab path. Groups Urge Lawmakers to Oppose 'Devastating' Net Neutrality Rollback Despite Republican Appeals, Democrats Not Willing to Deal on Net Neutrality Legislation There’s just no pleasing some radical, pro-government, anti-Constitution people. John Oliver: Multi-Millionaire, Big Government, Big Business ‘Champion of the Little Guy’

HBO Calls It ‘Last Week Tonight’ – Because ‘Cashing In’ Was Already Taken

HBO’s alleged comedian-host John Oliver (I’ve never found him to be particularly amusing) has the same problem a lot of wealthy Leftists have.

God has blessed Oliver (whether Oliver realizes it or not) – Oliver is wealthy. He makes a whole lot of money – in a field where maybe one in a thousand can even buy groceries plying their wares. Making it in entertainment is catching lightening in a bottle – twice.

Oliver makes huge coin – for a less-than-imperative service. He isn’t curing cancer. Nothing wrong with it – but he’s a court jester. Making as much as he does for what he does – leaves a lot of people in his position feeling almost like they’re cheating at life.

Many thus feel the need to crusade for causes – to make up for the incredible good fortune they enjoy. And when you aren’t a signally deep or practiced thinker – that oft means falling for the shallow facility of Leftism.

Oliver has fallen hard. And there’s no diving in his thought pool. More

Beware the Silicon Valley – and Thus the Web

For decades now, all of America’s major institutions – have been broadly, unquestionably Leftist, and rigidly opposed to any deviance from the entrenched doctrine.

Colleges and universities, Hollywood and entertainment, the Sciences and the News Media – all deeply in Leftism’s thrall.

And then there is the Silicon Valley – now the biggest, baddest, broadest institution of them all. Because of their dominance of the Internet – they have their hands in all of the legacy institutions.

The Silicon Valley has had for more than a decade a license to print money. And they bestow tens of millions of dollars of it in endowments to Leftist colleges – including tons of coin in directed “science” like global warming…oops, I mean climate change.

The Valley is out Hollywood-ing Hollywood – self-producing a great and growing number of movies and television shows. More

We Are Finally Moving Towards Actually Free Global Trade

I am a retired musician. I play three instruments - but I sang, is what I mainly did. My first band in high school was big into three-part vocal harmonies. We covered a bunch of songs - and wrote a few - that featured this rousing sound. One thing you immediately learn (if you didn’t already know it) is that when three or more voices are simultaneous and in harmony - they create a resonance that is louder than the voices operating individually. It is beautiful music - more powerful in coordinated conjunction. So it is with global trade. Now-President Donald Trump - is introducing proper music education to Washington, D.C. DC for decades has been perfectly happy with - and accommodating of - the world’s many nations performing from sheet music far different than the pages we have. The phony “free trade” in which we have long engaged - has had us lowering tariffs and government impediments to the globe’s goods and services entering our market. While nigh every other nation on the planet has taxed and regulated the living daylight out of nigh everything we send them. While subsidizing the daylight into their domestic products. Imagine the lead singer in the key of “G” - and every other nation crooning in “C#dim7.” So it now is with global trade. The rest of the planet is in harmonious sync - all working from the same anti-free trade songbook. We’re the lead singer - and our go-it-alone less government trade approach is dissonantly clashing. These many nations have used our decades of stupidity against us - and have drained hundreds of billions of dollars of wealth out of here and into there. Very many of them have had year after year, decade after decade of ridiculously huge Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth - at our exorbitant expense, as ours continued towards flatline. Trump has finally pointed out the obvious - that the global trade market is the Emperor with No Tone. That the Singing Emperor - is naked, and off-key. That it’s high time that EVERY nation - join us on the free trade song sheet. Most of DC - still doesn’t get it. They confuse things like Trump threatening to impose a massive tariff on all things China or tariffs on imported steel - with Trump actually imposing them. What Trump’s doing - is using the threat of tariffs as a can opener to pry open the world’s closed markets. And piece by trade piece, Trump is moving us - and the world - in the free trade direction. We’re getting less government impediments to trade - all over the place. An Ag Subsidy Dream for Buenos Aires: “WTO members this week also wrapped up a session of agriculture talks where they discussed a deluge of six new proposals on farm subsidies…. “On the top of the pile was a proposal led by the European Union and Brazil that aims to limit trade-distortive support by setting a percentage threshold on the amount of support a country can provide as it relates to the total value of its agricultural production. The EU at the meeting said the proposal "provides a new architecture which would put all WTO members on the same basis and encourage reform efforts,” according to a Geneva trade official.” US Beef is Back on Market in China: “(W)henever changes make foreign sales easier, they are welcome. In that regard, a new trade pact with China is an especially positive development. The door to U.S. beef exports to the world’s most populous nation has been re-opened after being closed for 14 years. “According to the USDA, the return of U.S. beef and beef products is a part of the U.S.-China 100-Day Action Plan that was announced by the Trump administration on May 11.” U.S., Mexico Clear Way for NAFTA with New Deal on Sugar Trade: “‘The Mexican side has agreed to nearly every request by the U.S. industry to address flaws in the current system and to ensure fair treatment of American sugar growers,’ Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said at a news conference Tuesday.” That’s a whole lot less government - all over the world. A shocking novelty in DC trade. And portending a whole lot more less government going forward. Not everyone doesn’t get it. Five Good Reasons Trump’s Agenda Is a Win for America: “Trump’s priorities are more than defensible; they are essential to the future of our country….1) Resetting the scales with our trading partners to ensure U.S. workers are treated fairly….5) Letting the world know that the U.S. will stand up for its citizens” Those are two massively important principles for which to stand. They will vastly improve America’s prospects in innumerable ways. It is way past time to level the international trade playing field. It has for far too long been tilted sharply against us. And harmonizing global trade policy - will harmonize a great many other things. There’s a whole lot less acrimony and mistrust - when everyone knows everyone is getting a good deal. This first appeared in Red State.
