Really Bad Precedent: Allowing Governments to Tax Non-Constituents

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

Indeed It Is

The Supreme Court is currently considering South Dakota v Wayfair. A case debating whether or not state and municipal governments can collect their respective sales taxes – on non-resident business and people who have the temerity to complete a transaction in their jurisdictions.

President Donald Trump is on this absolutely correct – in one sense. Online retailers like the case-cited Wayfair – do have a tax-less advantage over brick-and-mortar stores in localities that impose sales taxes.

If you live in one or more sales tax jurisdictions and you shop brick-and-mortar – you pay the sales taxes. If you live there and shop Wayfair – you do not necessarily render unto Caesar. (Some online companies – Amazon, for instance – collect many of the sales taxes in much of the nation.) More

Maryland Governor Hogan Must Veto the Democrats’ Latest Tax Increase

Your Maryland State-Issued ID

Maryland has one of our nation’s more oxymoronic state nicknames: “The Free State.”

Oxymoronic – because the decades-now Democrat-dominated state legislature has spent their time and legislative effort ensuring that everything in “The Free State”…is inordinately expensive.

Most especially government. In 2016, Maryland was the most taxed state in the union. Maryland Democrats are so tax-happy, they were even taxing…the rain.

But in November 2016 – something wonderful happened. The good people of Maryland very wisely elected as Governor – Republican Larry Hogan. Who ran in no small part on a copious tax-cutting platform.

And once elected, Hogan kept his word. Gone was the very obnoxious rain tax – despite vociferous Democrat objection – and many other levies and fees.

But Democrats will not go quietly into that less-tax night. They have just passed a huge new tax increase. And done so – under the false flag of business tax “reform.” Behold SB 1090. More

Get Hammered – and Sick-eled

National Football League (NFL) Commissioner Roger Goodell – has had a bit of a bad decade.

(So bad – that his ex-television-news-host wife was caught with a fake Twitter account Tweeting in his defense.)

Goodell began this time frame under-reacting to legitimate problems like the New England Patriots’ Spygate.

Goodell then woefully mishandled the break of the chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) concussion story.

Goodell then tried to play catchup – by ridiculously overreacting to non-stories like the Patriots’ Deflategate.

While under-reacting to woeful off-the-field player behavior. Epitomized by his under-punishment of then-Baltimore Raven running back Ray Rice for beating his fiancé – only to then be embarrassed when video of one violent incident became public.

Then came the player protests of the National Anthem, the United States flag and the nation.

It all started during last year’s preseason – as a one-man-gang by then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Who – rather than standing respectfully during the Anthem – kneeled.   Kaepernick’s protest quickly spread – amongst his teammates, and throughout the league.

About all of which Goodell did…nothing. More

The Post Office: Doing All the Wrong Things in All the Wrong Ways

The Pony Express 2.0

Government is awful at doing…just about everything.

In no small part because of the rigid, unyielding dictates of human nature. Government, of course, being populated by humans – is not immune to these dictates.

Because of government’s susceptibility – there is the Yellow Pages Rule.

“What’s ‘Yellow Pages?’” I hear the Millennials ask. Fair enough:

Since the advent of the Internet, an increasing number of people no longer know what a phone book is.  Thick, heavy tomes periodically updated and delivered to your residence – full of listings of people (White Pages) and businesses (Yellow Pages), their addresses and phone numbers.

Back in the Cretaceous Period – this was how you found contact information.

So – The Yellow Pages Rule: More

Indeed We Should

One of the very many problems in the festering Swamp that is Washington, D.C. – is the inert posture most of its denizens so often strike. Too many pose and preen – but never actually do anything.

Which we rightly, roundly, routinely criticize.

So when DC does something well and good – we are obliged to call attention to and praise it, and them.

One of those magical moments just transpired. The good DC did – was to undo another of the very many problems in the festering Swamp that is DC.

Some of the so rampant awfulness an unelected, unaccountable bureaucracy unilaterally, so incessantly foists upon us.

As those of us who didn’t succumb to government schools know, the way DC is supposed to work is – the Legislative Branch legislates, then the Executive Branch executes. If the first thing doesn’t happen – the second thing isn’t supposed to either.

WAY too often, the Executive Branch does all sorts of things the Legislative Branch never granted it legislative permission to do. It’s been going on for decades – and the Barack Obama Administration raised it to a heinous art form. More

The Left: The Far and Away Hugest Spenders of ‘Dark Money’

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

But Not the Left’s, of Course

The Left and the media (please pardon the redundancy) are endlessly fascinated with so-called “dark money”…on the political Right. And only on the political Right.

Wikipedia defines “dark money” as: “In…politics…, dark money are funds given to nonprofit organizations – and include 501(c)(4) (social welfare) 501(c)(5) (unions) and 501(c)(6) (trade association) groups – that can receive unlimited donations from corporations, individuals, and unions, and spend funds to influence elections, but are not required to disclose their donors.”

You’ve undoubtedly countless times heard the apparently conjoined phrases “dark money” and “Koch brothers.”

Let us begin with the fact that if we all know all about the Koch brothers’ political donations – the coin isn’t particularly dark, is it? More

Key Component of Actually Free Trade: Punishing Bad Actors

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

Finally – We’re Using Both

We have long roundly ridiculed what has passed for “free trade” in Washington, D.C.

Where we remove nigh all of our government impediments to the goods and services of every other nation on the planet. And nigh no other country returns the favor. Nations the world over impose all sorts of tariffs and regulatory impediments upon anything we wish to export to them.

About which we have done absolutely nothing. For decades.

It’s the same story – over and over and over again. We get beaten and abused throughout the duration of an existing trade deal. About which we do…nothing. And then we sit down to negotiate the next trade deal – acting as if the beatings and abuse haven’t been happening. And we blithely cut another, idiotically similar new trade deal – that allows the beatings and abuse to continue unabated.

Lather, rinse, repeat. For decades. More
