George Soros and Google Champion Government Control of the Internet

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

Yes, Please –
With the Added Benefit of Angering George Soros and Google

Part of the President Donald Trump Reality Revolution – is undoing the President Barack Obama Anti-Reality Revolution.

You remember, the Obama-promised “fundamental transformation” – that led to amazingly bad policies and terrible results.  Obama’s massive regulatory assaults on all things private sector – were an intended disaster for the private sector.  Obama is the first president in our history to never, ever have even one year of at least 3% Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth.

Obama did this – because he wanted to repeal the private sector, and replace it with government.  More government – means less private sector.  Each new regulatory attack – was yet another government advancement.  Forcing yet another private sector retreat.  Lather, rinse repeat – for eight years.

This was the very successfully implemented plan.  Of not just Obama – but Obama’s backers.  Chief amongst them were George Soros and Google. More

Mass Murder – Shouldn’t Be Chic

Rap metal band Rage Against the Machine is known for, amongst other things, playing nigh every show in front of a giant banner of Communist mass murderer Che Guevara.  This is no accident: “‘We’ve considered Che a fifth band member for a long time now,’ gushed (guitarist) Tom Morello, ‘for the simple reason that he exemplifies the integrity and revolutionary ideals to which we aspire.’”

Well isn’t that special.

Flashback to 2002 and another musician (who actually sings) – Toby Keith.  The country star had – partly in response to the September 11th, 2001 Islamist attacks on our nation – written the massive hit “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue.”

A very patriotic song – that admittedly has some brusque lyrics: “Justice will be served and the battle will rage – This big dog will fight when you rattle his cage – And you’ll be sorry that you messed with – The U.S. of A. – ‘Cause we’ll put a boot in your ass – It’s the American way.”

Keith’s song peaked at #1 on 2002 Independence Day weekend.  Good timing: the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) was putting on an Independence Day concert – and had invited Keith to perform. More

DC Economics ‘Experts’: Too Much ‘DC’ – Not Enough ‘Economics’

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

More Out of Balance than Ever

Steve Forbes, Larry Kudlow, Arthur B. Laffer and Stephen Moore are four big name Washington, D.C. free market economic “experts.”  They have for decades been ensconced inside the Beltway – doling out their brands of reform.

But as we have seen from nigh anyone who enters the belly of the DC Beast – people grow comfortable, and start to stray from the less government ideas that brought them there.

Rather than rock the boat – they’d prefer to remain comfortably aboard.

DC is now a $4-trillion-a-year luxury liner.  Retaining your all-access-passage – far too often trumps adhering to better policy.

Art Laffer was the first to deviate from the conservative norm.  He has for years been a leading champion of the Marketplace Fairness Act.  An absolutely awful federal law that would empower state governments to collect sales and use taxes – from companies not located in those states.

Get that?  This is the quintessential example of taxation without representation. More

The Border Adjustment Tax: If You’re Right – You Don’t Have to Lie

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

Once Lost, Integrity is Difficult to Regain

I like Bill Buckley, Frederic Bastiat, Milton Friedman and a whole host of other conservative luminaries.  But I am a conservative first and foremost – because I loathe lies and liars.  And Leftism – is a giant lie.

All the lies told by all of Leftism’s practitioners – are told in service of hiding the fact that the Big Idea behind all of it is hopelessly failed and fraudulent.  What is particularly annoying for a conservative – is when other conservatives do their best Left impersonations, and lie to advance a bad idea.

I speak of the very good idea that is the Border Adjustment Tax (BAT) – and the lies some conservatives are telling to try to stop it.

What is the BAT?: “Under (this) tax reform, this system would not tax the exports of American companies, but would tax the gross value of any imports into the country. The new rate of tax on corporations is expected to be 20 percent, so that would also be the de facto rate of tax on imports.

“U.S. companies would immediately be on equal footing with their international competitors, the great majority of whom benefit from territorial taxation and border adjustability today.  American firms would be further advantaged by tax reform’s low 20 percent tax rate on corporations (down from a global high 35 percent today), and full business expensing of asset purchases (replacing multi-year depreciation deductions).

“Instead of taxing exports and not imports, we’d be taxing imports and not exports. Instead of reading about corporate inversions and outsourcing, we’d be reading about jobs and firms moving into the U.S. to take advantage of the favorable tax rules here.” More

Things Global Trade Are, Slowly, Moving in a Less Government Direction

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

Finally

When now-President Donald Trump first burst on to the political scene, one of the ways he made a name for himself was by ridiculing many of the trade deals the United States has spent the last several decades cutting.

Trump pointed out that our trade agreements were far from “free.”  They were usually one-sided sell-outs – where we agreed to not tax or regulate other countries’ imports, while none of the other countries agreed to do any such thing with ours.

Trump’s frequent visual aide was China (I still have yet to find a way to spell phonetically the way he pronounces it).  China taxes everything we send them.  China gives all sorts of preferential treatment to their companies that export.  China even manipulates their currency to artificially lower the prices of their exports on the global market.

About all of which we do…nothing.  We continue to cut deal after deal with them.  Where we pledge all sorts of free market protections for their products – and they promise none for ours, and are allowed to continue to manipulate the market in all of the same ways they always have.  And then we wave around the next signed agreement and hail it as another “free trade” deal – when it is anything but. Hill Democrats Given Lie-Filled Cheat Sheets for Pre-Planned Townhall ‘Spontaneity’

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

Team Rocket Science

The longest-running joke in politics is the utter cluelessness of most Leftists – and elected Democrats.  Thanks to the wonderment of the free market Internet, the catalogue of examples of this are just a Web search away – and are near limitless in number.

At the height of Bernie Sanders mania, the maniacs were regularly asked basic questions about the socialism they were championing.  Their responses were mind-numbingly stupid.

Think Hillary Clinton supporters were any better?  Think again.  Asked to name “The Most Accomplished Person Ever to Run for the Presidency (TM)”’s top accomplishments – her supporters were time and again left speechless.  Although in their defense, their champion was also routinely unable to name any her own self.

And President Barack Obama – off the teleprompter – was…less than impressive.

Speaking of elected officials, some of the most ridiculous assertions ever made come therefrom.    Years ago, Texas Representative Sheila Jackson Lee was in NASA Headquarters in her home city of Houston watching do its thing the Mars Rover – the camera-equipped vehicle we regularly drop on the Red Planet.  Befuddled, she asked…why it wasn’t driven over to show us where our astronauts planted the United States flag.  Ummm, that was the Moon, Representative. The Media’s Mass Delusion and Dishonesty

It’s Been a Decades-Long Incursion

It’s always sadly amusing to watch America’s media march as one – in one direction after another.  To even the average observer, it would appear that they all receive the exact same issues to cover – and the exact same talking points with which to cover them.

The examples of this are at this point nigh limitless.  Talk radio impresario Rush Limbaugh has for years compiled his Media Montages – audio cavalcades of talking heads spouting identical words to describe the same stories.

In Global Trade, We Need Equal Protection from All Governments

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

‘Leave All of Us Alone’
Is a Pretty Good Summary

Yesterday we wrote of, here at home, the long lost beauty of equal protection before the law.  Which the Fourteenth Amendment of our Constitution mandates – but our government almost never delivers.

By forsaking this important tenet, we opened wide the door to cronyism – with government playing favorites amongst private sector players.  Decades later, we have a heinous patchwork quilt of laws and regulations – oft even contradictory rules that have been time and again warped to the will of the highest bidders.

The result – is anything but a free market economy.  Want to know why our nation has basically stagnated for decades?  A crucial component of the sclerosis – is our government’s steadfast refusal to treat everyone equally.

But as brilliant as our Constitution is – it is not the original font of this particular piece of wisdom.  The idea that government should treat everyone equally – goes back a bit further.  At least to ancient Greece – and Aristotle:  “The only stable state is the one in which all men are equal before the law.”

That’s good news.  It means it’s timeless – and without boundaries and borders.  Which means we can – and should – apply it to everything.  Including global trade. More

The Long Lost Beauty of Equal Protection Before the Law

The Good Old Days of
Fourteenth Amendment Adherence
(It Certainly Seems to Have Been That Long)

The Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution contains the “Equal Protection Clause.”  Washington, D.C. has long ignored just about all of our founding document – perhaps no portion thereof more than the Equal Protection Clause.

Located at the end of Section I of the Fourteenth, the Equal Protection Clause reads in part:

“No State shall…deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”

DC’s devolution from this perfect protection – brings leaping to mind George Orwell.  When most people hear the name of the uber-author – they think “Nineteen Eighty-Four.”  I’m absolutely a fan of that tome – and much of his oeuvre – but my favorite Orwell effort remains “Animal Farm”:

“(T)wo young pigs, Snowball and Napoleon, assume command and consider it a duty to prepare for the Rebellion. The animals revolt and drive the drunken and irresponsible farmer Mr. Jones from the farm, renaming it ‘Animal Farm.’ More

You’d Never Have Heard of Google and Facebook, Netflix and Uber Without…

Seton Motley | Less Government | LessGovernment.org

The Key Ingredient – That Gets You to All the Others

The Washington, D.C.-New York Bubble has a decidedly skewed view of what constitutes things like “Tech” and “The Internet.”  The Bubble references Tech or the Internet, and they mean companies like Google and Facebook, Netflix and Uber – and only those types of companies.  This is a ridiculously partial, partisan perspective.

Because before you can search the Web or stream some ‘Flix – you must first connect to the Internet.  And that requires an Internet Service Provider (ISP).  Companies like Comcast and Verizon, Clear Channel and AT&T.  Without whom – Google, Facebook, Netflix and Uber would still be…absolutely nowhere.

Netflix is a quintessential example of these titans’ irrelevance without ISPs.  Just a few years ago, Netflix was a snail-mail DVD delivery company – and struggling to survive.  But the ISPs relentlessly kept up their massive investment and technological advancement.  And the download speeds they deliver increased to such routinely high levels that Netflix could confidently sell their streaming movie service – “Over The Top (OTT)” of those screamingly fast Internet lines.

Boom – Netflix became a giant.  In fact, it is predicted that there will by 2019 be 330+ million streaming video customers.  All made possible – in fact, impossible without – the ISPs.

But in The Bubble, being an essential ISP – is just about a totally thankless task.  ISPs are the people who lay the World Wide Web roads – on which all these Bubble “Internet” companies ride.  Yet somehow in The Bubble – ISPs aren’t even considered to be Internet companies. More
